10 May - Green Howards Sunday

Today, as Mayor and Mayoress of Richmond, we had the honour of attending the annual Green Howards Sunday service. A truly moving and proud occasion for our town and community.
We began the day alongside the Green Howards marching band and veterans as they proudly marched through Richmond, before gathering at the Green Howards War Memorial on Frenchgate for the touching laying of wreaths in remembrance of those who gave so much in service to our country. The memorial itself has stood proudly in Richmond since 1921 and remains a powerful symbol of remembrance and sacrifice within our town. This was followed by a beautiful and uplifting church service honouring both the past and present of the Green Howards. Our sincere thanks go to Revd Canon Martin Fletcher for leading such a heartfelt service that reflected the pride, history, and comradeship so deeply rooted within the regiment. We then had the privilege of taking the salute from the troops before presenting the prestigious 25 and 50 year badges to those who have given such loyal service and commitment over many decades, a wonderful celebration of dedication, friendship, and regimental spirit.
The day continued at the Comrades Club and The Green Howards Museum, where everyone came together to enjoy an excellent buffet and refreshments whilst sharing memories, stories, and laughter. The Green Howards have been part of Richmond’s fabric for generations, with deep ties to the town, its people, and its history, and days like today show just how strong those connections remain. We were also deeply honoured to be joined by such distinguished guests throughout the day, including Field Marshal Lord Nick Houghton and Lady Brenda Hale. Lord Houghton’s long and distinguished military career includes serving as Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces and he also has proud historical ties with the Green Howards regiment itself. Lady Hale, Baroness Hale of Richmond, is one of the country’s most respected legal figures and made history as the first woman to serve as President of the UK Supreme Court. Their presence made the occasion even more special and reflected the deep respect and admiration held for the Green Howards and the Richmond community alike. It was a wonderful reminder of the strength of community, the importance of remembrance, and the enduring bond between Richmond and the Green Howards, once a Green Howard, always a Green Howard.
