15 Sep - Heritage Open Days

Richmond and District Civic Society coordinated and promoted a series of Heritage Open Days.

The Mayoress and myself were fortunate to be in the group visiting Richmond Castle, in particular the cells where the Conscientious Objectors were held in WW1 and others in the Second World War.

We were given a most interesting talk on the graffiti by Kevin Booth, Head of Collections for English Heritage. He has spent many years gathering information and deciphering what was written and drawn on the walls.

Colin Grant then spoke about his own research from a drawing in the cell block of U Boat 33 and the River Clyde during the last war. More information is in The Civic Society Richmond Review 2024- 25.

Thanks must also go to Phoebe, the Richmond Castle Site Manager for her help and enthusiasm, along with the staff on duty.

I hope Graham Berry and others will organise a similar programme for next year.
