27 April - Richmondshire Ladies Netball Club

It was a real pleasure, as Mayor of Richmond, to attend the Richmondshire Ladies Netball Club end-of-season training evening.
After chairing a full Town Council meeting, I made my way up to Richmond School where I was warmly welcomed by Hilary and the whole team. I only wish I’d made it there earlier, I even had my shorts in the car, ready to join in!
A special mention must go to Hilary, who founded the club back in 2011 after finishing her own playing days at Gateshead Stadium. What started as a way to create local opportunities for women to train and play has grown into a thriving, inclusive club at the heart of our community. With limited access to nearby teams at the time, Hilary’s vision and determination have made a lasting difference for so many.
The club now fields teams in both the Darlington and Hambleton leagues, with players from Year 10 upwards, and has enjoyed a fantastic season. Training numbers have been strong, the junior section continues to grow, and it’s great to see players beginning their journeys into umpiring and coaching.
It’s also wonderful to see local support behind the club, with their new 2025/26 kit made possible thanks to a sponsorship grant from ProPharma, a great example of business backing grassroots sport.
What stood out most on the night was the friendly, welcoming atmosphere that Hilary and the team have built, a place where everyone can learn, develop, and enjoy the game.
Although I missed the chance to take to the court, I was delighted to arrive in time for the presentations, the fantastic homemade cakes and to celebrate the achievements of all involved.
Well done to everyone at Richmondshire Ladies Netball Club, a brilliant club with a strong future ahead 💜
