Granting the Freedom of Richmond to The Royal Lancers
Granting the Freedom, is the greatest honour, the Town of Richmond can give. On Saturday it was bestowed upon The Royal Lancers( Queen Elizabeth’s’ Own).
Firstly at a ceremony in The Council Chamber, where The Freedom was formally given by a unanimous vote of Councillors a scroll was presented and gifts exchanged.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, a large crowd were waiting in The Market Place, for The Military March Past. There was intense anticipation as the approaching band could be heard in the distance, followed by a solitary drum. Suddenly the band struck up again as it entered The Market Place, followed by The Royal Lancers Regiment in full ceremonial uniform. A most moving occasion!
Crowds of locals, visitors and families of those participating followed the parade into The Castle and were met by The Regiment standing, with the castle walls, as a backdrop.
Following an inspection and Regimental Drumhead Service the soldiers marched off to loud cheers and applause.
It was certainly an occasion that anybody viewing or participating would ever forget.
