Plough Sunday Service - Ripon Cathedral 11 January 2026

As Mayor of Richmond, I was honoured to represent our town on Sunday afternoon at the Plough Sunday Service held in the majestic surroundings of Ripon Cathedral. On what was a cold Sunday afternoon, it was heart-warming to see the cathedral so full, with people coming together to celebrate this long-standing tradition.

Plough Sunday marks the beginning of the agricultural year, giving thanks for the work of farmers and those who care for the land, and asking for God’s blessing on the coming seasons. It is a powerful reminder of the deep connection between faith, land, food, and community.

The service was led by the Dean, the Very Revd John Dobson DL, with an inspiring sermon from the Most Revd and Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, who truly knows their onions! The plough was blessed by the Bishop of Ripon, the Right Revd Anna Eltringham, symbolising hope and renewal for the year ahead. Prayers were led by the Revd Ian Pruden, and the music from the cathedral choir added greatly to the atmosphere.

It was a pleasure to be seated alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs Johanna Ropner, the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, other Mayors and their consorts, and most importantly the farmers, their families and friends. I was also struck by the insightful presentation from future farmers Joe Seels and Antonia Ramaden, whose passion offers real hope for agriculture.

The blessing of the plough remains a powerful symbol of community support for farmers across North Yorkshire and beyond. Today’s service was a moving reminder of the strength found when communities come together in gratitude and hope.
