The Royal British Legion Annual Poppy Appeal Dinner - 8 January 2026

It was an honour to attend the Royal British Legion Annual Poppy Appeal Dinner this evening with the mayoress, at The Fleece Hotel, celebrating the dedication, generosity and teamwork that underpin the Poppy Appeal across Richmond and the surrounding district.

The evening was an opportunity to recognise the outstanding efforts of so many people who give their time, energy and commitment to supporting our Armed Forces community not just during the Poppy Appeal, but throughout the year.

We remembered with great respect the late Bob White, who served as Chairman for 20 years. His leadership, dedication and steady presence shaped the work of the Legion locally, and his legacy continues to guide and inspire those who follow.

Thank you to Beryl and Paul, who now lead the Poppy Appeal both locally and nationally, and to Keith Jeffrey, Chairman, for his leadership. Leadership is rarely a solo effort, and there is an old saying that behind every good man is an amazing woman a sentiment that rings true with the continued support of Denise, reminding us that this work is very much a team effort.

Congratulations to Nina on becoming the Reeth and District representative, and thank you for stepping forward to support the future of the Legion.

I would also like to acknowledge the support of our Town Councillors, particularly Heather, our Town Clerk, and Olly, along with Loo Morton, who took on the important role of coordinating proceedings on Remembrance Day a responsibility long associated with our much-missed Bob.

As one saying reminds us, “We honour the past not by repeating it, but by building on it.” Just because something has always been done a certain way does not necessarily mean it must always remain so. That spirit of respect paired with progress was evident throughout the evening.

Of course, it is impossible to name everyone who contributes, but to all the volunteers, collectors, organisers and supporters who work quietly behind the scenes: your efforts are recognised, valued and deeply appreciated.

Richmond is proud of its strong connection to the Royal British Legion and remains committed to standing alongside our Armed Forces community. 🌺
